What Is EPC — And Why Does It Matter?

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. In the context of solar power, it describes the comprehensive, end-to-end delivery of a solar power plant — from initial site assessment and detailed system design through equipment procurement, civil and electrical construction, system integration, testing, commissioning, and handover.

Choosing an EPC partner is the single most consequential decision in a solar project. The EPC contractor is responsible for every technical decision, every procurement choice, every quality standard, and every construction outcome that will determine how your plant performs for the next 25 years.

Phase 01 — Site Assessment and Feasibility Analysis

Solar Resource Assessment: We conduct a detailed analysis of the solar irradiation profile at your site using industry-standard meteorological data, satellite-derived irradiance datasets, and on-site measurement where applicable. We do not rely on generic regional averages. We build a site-specific solar resource model that accurately reflects the generation potential of your location — across seasons, weather conditions, and time of day.

Site Survey and Geotechnical Assessment: Our engineering team conducts a comprehensive physical survey of the site, assessing available area, orientation, shading obstructions, structural constraints (for rooftop systems), soil conditions and bearing capacity (for ground-mounted systems), and access logistics. For rooftop systems, we conduct detailed structural assessments to ensure your building can safely support the intended solar installation.

Grid Connectivity Assessment: We evaluate the available grid infrastructure at or near your site — including substation capacity, feeder availability, and grid stability — to understand the connectivity options, costs, and constraints for your project. We provide an honest assessment of grid connectivity timelines and requirements, so there are no surprises during the approval or commissioning process.

Shadow Analysis and Yield Modelling: Using advanced simulation tools including PVsyst, we model the expected annual energy generation of your proposed solar system — accounting for site-specific irradiation data, shading from surrounding structures and vegetation, system losses, and equipment performance parameters. Our yield models are calibrated against real-world performance data from comparable operating assets — ensuring that the projections we present are conservative, defensible, and genuinely achievable.

Financial Feasibility Analysis: We prepare a detailed financial model for your project — including capital cost estimates, energy yield projections, grid tariff comparisons, payback period calculations, net present value analysis, and internal rate of return — to give you a complete and honest picture of the financial case for your solar investment before any commitment is made.

Phase 02 — Detailed Engineering

Detailed engineering is where a solar project is truly designed — and where the long-term performance of the plant is fundamentally determined. Poor engineering decisions made at this stage cannot be corrected by excellent construction. The foundation of a high-performing solar asset is a rigorously engineered system.

Our detailed engineering scope covers every technical aspect of your solar power plant:

System Design and Optimisation: We design your solar power system from first principles — selecting the optimal combination of panel technology, inverter topology, mounting structure, and system architecture for your specific site, load profile, and commercial objectives. We do not apply a standard template to every project. Every system we design is optimised for its specific context.

Solar Panel Layout and Shading Analysis: We develop detailed panel layout drawings that maximise the use of available area while minimising inter-row shading losses, respecting structural and access constraints, and optimising string configuration for inverter compatibility. Our layouts are developed iteratively, with multiple options evaluated and compared before a final design is confirmed.

DC System Design: We design the complete DC side of the solar system — including string configuration, DC cable sizing, combiner box specification, DC protection devices, and earthing arrangements — to minimise resistive losses, ensure system safety, and optimise inverter loading across all operating conditions.

AC System Design: We design the complete AC electrical infrastructure for your plant — including inverter output cabling, AC distribution boards, transformer specification, metering arrangements, and grid connection equipment — in accordance with all applicable Indian and international electrical standards.

SCADA and Monitoring Architecture: We design a comprehensive SCADA and remote monitoring system for your plant — enabling real-time visibility of generation data, equipment health, alarm conditions, and key performance indicators. Structural Engineering: For rooftop systems, we design mounting structures that are structurally compatible with your building, wind-load certified, and corrosion-resistant. For ground-mounted systems, we design pile foundations and module mounting structures engineered for your specific soil conditions, wind zone, and module configuration. All structural designs are prepared by qualified structural engineers and documented for regulatory submission.

Bill of Materials and Technical Specifications: We prepare a complete, itemised Bill of Materials for every component in your solar system — specifying technical requirements, quality standards, testing certifications, and performance guarantees. These specifications form the basis of our procurement process, ensuring that every component sourced for your project meets the standards required for long-term, high-performance operation.

Phase 03 — Procurement and Vendor Management

Procurement is where the quality and cost-effectiveness of a solar project are largely determined — and where many EPC contractors let their clients down, either through poor vendor selection, inflated procurement margins, or the substitution of inferior components after contract award.

At Truven Energy, our procurement process is built on three principles: technical rigour, complete transparency, and genuine independence from supplier influence.

Technology-Agnostic Vendor Evaluation: We maintain no exclusive supplier agreements and accept no commercial incentives from equipment manufacturers. Our vendor evaluations are conducted entirely on the basis of technical merit — assessing module efficiency, power output warranty, degradation guarantee, temperature coefficient, mechanical durability, and manufacturer financial stability for solar panels; and efficiency, reliability, warranty terms, grid compliance, and after-sales support for inverters and other electrical equipment.

Open-Book Procurement: We share our vendor evaluation matrices, comparative quotations, and negotiated pricing with our clients in full. You know exactly what equipment is being proposed, why it has been selected over alternatives, what it costs, and what commercial terms have been agreed with the supplier. There are no hidden procurement margins and no unexplained line items.

Global and Domestic Sourcing: We source from a carefully curated panel of global and domestic manufacturers — spanning Tier 1 solar panel manufacturers, leading inverter brands, and high-quality mounting structure fabricators. Our sourcing panel is continuously reviewed and updated based on performance data from operating projects, manufacturer audit findings, and evolving market intelligence.

Logistics and Supply Chain Management: We manage the complete logistics and supply chain for your project — including international and domestic freight, customs clearance, inland transportation, and site delivery — ensuring that equipment arrives on time, in undamaged condition, and with all required documentation and certifications.

Inspection and Quality Assurance at Source: For larger projects, we conduct factory acceptance testing and quality inspection at the manufacturer’s facility before despatch — verifying that the equipment supplied meets the specifications agreed at procurement and the quality standards required for long-term performance.

Phase 04 — Civil and Structural Construction

The quality of civil and structural work on a solar project has a direct and lasting impact on plant safety, structural integrity, and long-term performance. Poorly executed civil work — inadequate foundations, non-compliant cable trenching, substandard module mounting — creates risks that can manifest as safety incidents, structural failures, or performance degradation years after commissioning.

Model 01 — CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) Model

What is the CAPEX Model?

In the CAPEX model, you — the client — invest upfront to own your solar power plant outright. Truven Energy designs, engineers, procures, constructs, and commissions the plant on your behalf, delivering a fully operational, high-performance solar system that belongs to you from day one.
You invest in the solar power plant as a capital asset. The plant generates electricity which is consumed directly by your facility, reducing your dependence on grid power and lowering your electricity costs. Any surplus generation — depending on your grid agreement — may be exported to the grid under a net metering or net billing arrangement, generating further financial benefit.

Maximum long-term savings: As the owner of the asset, you capture the full financial benefit of every unit of energy generated by your plant — with no tariff payments to a third-party asset owner.
Accelerated depreciation: Solar power plants qualify for accelerated depreciation under Indian tax law — providing a significant tax benefit in the early years of plant operation that substantially improves the after-tax return on investment.
Complete ownership and control: You own the asset. You control every operational decision. There are no contractual obligations to a third-party owner, no lock-in periods, and no restrictions on how you use or modify your energy infrastructure.

Model 02 — OPEX Model (Zero Investment / RESCO)

What is the OPEX / RESCO Model?

In the OPEX model — also known as the RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) model — you receive all the benefits of solar power without investing any capital in the plant. Truven Energy or its financing partners own the solar asset and sell you energy at a fixed, pre-agreed tariff that is lower than your current grid electricity cost. You pay only for the energy you consume — nothing more, nothing less. No upfront investment, no asset management responsibility, no technology risk, and no maintenance headache.
Truven Energy designs, finances, constructs, and operates a solar power plant on your premises or at a nearby location. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is executed between you and Truven Energy, specifying the energy tariff, the contract duration (typically 15 to 25 years), the performance guarantees, and the terms of the arrangement. From day one of plant commissioning, you begin purchasing solar energy at your contracted tariff — which is fixed or subject to a pre-agreed, transparent escalation mechanism — achieving immediate savings against your prevailing grid electricity cost.

Zero capital investment: You do not invest a single rupee in the solar plant. All capital, financing, and asset ownership costs are borne by Truven Energy or its financing partners.
Immediate cost savings: Your contracted solar tariff is set below your current grid electricity cost — meaning you begin saving money from the first day of plant operation.
No technology or performance risk: Truven Energy owns the plant and is contractually responsible for its performance. If the plant underperforms against guaranteed generation levels, the financial consequence is borne by us — not you.
No maintenance responsibility: All operations, maintenance, and performance management of the solar asset is handled entirely by Truven Energy. You have no maintenance obligations, no operational complexity, and no staffing requirements for the plant.
Predictable energy costs: Your solar tariff is fixed or subject to a clearly defined, transparent escalation mechanism — providing long-term energy cost predictability that is not available from the grid.
Immediate sustainability benefits: You begin consuming renewable energy from day one — contributing to your organisation’s sustainability targets and ESG commitments without any capital outlay.

The OPEX model is ideal for organisations that wish to reduce their electricity costs and carbon footprint immediately, without committing capital to a solar plant. It is particularly well-suited to businesses that prefer to deploy capital in their core operations, organisations that are capital-constrained, and clients who value simplicity — receiving clean energy at a below-grid tariff with no operational complexity or asset management responsibility.
Because we own the asset under the OPEX model, we have the same long-term interest in its performance as you do — arguably more so, since our financial returns depend on it generating energy as projected throughout the PPA period. This alignment of interest means our O&M standards under the OPEX model are the highest in the industry. Model 03 — Group Captive Open Access

What is the Group Captive Open Access Model?

The Group Captive Open Access model allows a group of corporate entities to jointly own a solar power generating plant and consume the generated energy at their respective facilities through the state open access transmission network. By meeting the regulatory criteria for captive consumption status, participating entities are able to purchase power from the jointly owned plant at a cost that is significantly lower than conventional grid supply — achieving substantial, long-term energy cost savings.
A group of eligible corporate entities — which may include companies within the same corporate group, or independent businesses that choose to participate collectively — jointly invest in a solar power plant that is sized to meet their combined energy requirements. The plant is developed, constructed, and commissioned by Truven Energy under an EPC contract. Each participating entity holds a defined ownership stake in the plant, proportional to their intended energy consumption. The generated energy is scheduled and wheeled through the state transmission network to each participant’s facility under an open access arrangement, and consumed against their respective consumption at their registered metering points.

Significantly lower energy costs: Power consumed through the Group Captive Open Access model is typically priced substantially below conventional grid supply — reflecting the lower cost of renewable generation and the favourable regulatory treatment afforded to captive consumption.
Regulatory benefits of captive status: Entities meeting the regulatory criteria for captive consumption — including the minimum ownership stake requirement — benefit from a more favourable open access charge structure than third-party open access consumers, improving the overall economics of the arrangement.
Shared capital investment: The capital cost of the solar plant is shared across multiple participating entities — reducing the individual investment required from each participant while enabling access to a larger, more cost-effective plant than any single entity might develop independently.
Long-term energy cost certainty: Once the plant is commissioned and the Group Captive arrangement is registered, participating entities enjoy stable, predictable energy costs that are protected from grid tariff escalation for the life of the asset.
Collective sustainability impact: Participating entities collectively reduce their carbon footprint and strengthen their ESG credentials through shared investment in a single, high-impact renewable energy asset.
Scalability: The Group Captive model can be structured to accommodate the addition of new participants or the expansion of the plant’s capacity over time — providing a scalable framework for growing energy requirements.

To qualify for captive consumption status under Indian electricity regulations, the Group Captive arrangement must meet specific criteria — including minimum ownership stakes for each participating entity and minimum self-consumption ratios. Truven Energy’s regulatory team has deep expertise in structuring Group Captive arrangements that meet all applicable requirements — ensuring that every participating entity achieves and maintains captive consumption status throughout the life of the arrangement.

The Group Captive Open Access model is best suited to industrial groups with multiple facilities across a state, corporate clusters with shared ownership structures, or coalitions of independent businesses with complementary energy profiles and a willingness to co-invest in a shared renewable energy asset. It is particularly compelling for energy-intensive industries where electricity costs represent a significant proportion of operating expenses, and where the cost savings available through Group Captive Open Access can deliver a meaningful competitive advantage.

Model 04 — Third Party Open Access

What is the Third Party Open Access Model?

The Third Party Open Access model enables organisations to purchase solar energy generated at a remotely located plant and consume it at their own facilities — with the power wheeled from the generation point to the consumption point through the state transmission network under a licensed open access arrangement. This model provides access to cost-competitive renewable energy without requiring the client to own the solar plant, accommodate it on their premises, or commit capital to its development.
A solar power plant is developed at a location where land, solar resource, and grid infrastructure make it optimal for generation — which may be far from the client’s consumption centre. Truven Energy develops, constructs, and operates the plant as an Independent Power Producer (IPP). A Power Purchase Agreement is executed between Truven Energy (or the plant owner) and the client, specifying the energy tariff, contract duration, scheduling arrangements, and performance terms. The generated energy is scheduled and wheeled through the state transmission network to the client’s metering point, where it is consumed and settled against the client’s open access account.

No on-site land or space required: The solar plant is located remotely — at a site optimised for solar generation — with no requirement for the client to provide land, rooftop area, or any on-site accommodation for the generating asset.
Below-grid energy tariffs: Solar energy purchased under a Third Party Open Access PPA is typically priced significantly below conventional grid supply — delivering immediate and sustained energy cost savings without any capital investment by the client.
Zero capital investment: The client purchases energy, not an asset. All capital investment, financing, and asset ownership is borne by the plant developer — in this case, Truven Energy or its financing partners.
Scalable energy volumes: The Third Party Open Access model can be structured to supply any volume of energy required by the client — from a few million units per year to hundreds of millions — making it scalable to even the largest industrial energy consumers.
Access to large-scale, high-efficiency generation: Remotely located, utility-scale solar plants benefit from superior site conditions, optimised system design, and economies of scale — delivering energy at a lower cost per unit than small-scale on-site systems.
Immediate sustainability impact: From the first day of supply, the client is consuming certified renewable energy — contributing directly to their sustainability targets and supporting renewable energy generation at scale.

Third Party Open Access is regulated at the state level in India, with each state electricity regulatory commission setting the applicable open access charges, scheduling procedures, and banking and settlement rules. These frameworks vary by state and evolve over time. Truven Energy’s regulatory team monitors and manages all relevant regulatory requirements for Third Party Open Access arrangements on behalf of our clients — ensuring full compliance, efficient scheduling, and optimised commercial outcomes under the applicable framework.
The Third Party Open Access model is best suited to organisations that have significant electricity consumption but limited on-site space for solar generation; urban facilities where rooftop or ground-mounted solar is not feasible at the required scale; energy-intensive industries that want to access large volumes of renewable energy at below-grid cost without capital investment; and organisations that are seeking to make a significant, measurable contribution to their sustainability targets through renewable energy procurement at scale.
